Description
L8R SK8R is a retro inspired 3D platformer, with an emphasis on speed and dripping with a 90's aesthetic.
The core gimmick is L8R SK8R is built around speed. At its core it's designed to push players to approach the game like a speedrunner.
Many of the classics that L8R SK8R is inspired by had a hub world. An explorable area with levels that could be unlocked by collecting that game’s MacGuffin; crystals in Crash Bandicoot, stars in Mario 64, dragons in Spyro, etc.
L8R SK8R's MacGuffin is Time.
Every time the player beats the record of a level, the time difference is collected. If the time is 5 minutes and the player beats it in 4 minutes and 30 seconds then the player collects 30 seconds of time. (Each level has a pre-set record before the player first plays it)
Time locks are scattered throughout the level. Each one requires a certain amount of time to unlock.
The player has a lot of options in how they approach these locks. If they need to collect another 5 minutes, they can beat 5 levels by 1 minute, 10 levels by 30 seconds, or any other combination.
To get those better times, players will have to improve their skills as well as take advantage of short cuts hidden throughout the levels.
There is a small amount of story in L8R SK8R; robots from the future have kidnapped all of humanity from every period of time. In order to undo this, one lone skater from the 90's has to travel across time, visiting different locations from history.
However, the story is largely told in the background. If the player collects CDs hidden in each level, then they can learn more about the backstory of the game.
